COMMUNITY-BASED DENTAL SEALANT PROGRAMS

ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

The Illinois Department of Public Health supports the use of community based dental providers for delivery of dental services in schools.  When choosing a company to provide sealant programs at school consult your local health department regarding recommended providers.  The attached letter outlines IDPH support of these programs.

If a community has a community-based program run through the local health department or another local not-for-profit agency (even if they use a sub-contractor), the program is grounded in the local health department and has a vested interest in the community and a proven track record.

When outside companies go into schools and see children with private insurance they are seeing children who are likely to already go to a dentist in the community.  We do not want outside providers to work in competition with local providers, we encourage community partnership.  The public health department  program targets low income children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of the preventive care and who are at the most risk of dental disease.

The community-based programs see children enrolled in Medicaid and the Division of Oral Health provides a small amount of funding for children who are enrolled in free and reduced meals and are not enrolled in All Kids.  The community programs see these children until that funding is exhausted.
